As we are facing the largest national disaster to ever impact our community, those living with Alzheimer’s and other dementias (as well as their care partners and families) need our help more than ever. As the Gayle Wells Foundation for Early Onset Alzheimer’s & Care (GWF) is headquartered in Houston, Texas, we have the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those living with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, and let them know there is a community of support around them.
As a former care partner, I can speak from personal experience that it is very difficult to know what services are available in our community for this disease. Add to that the stress of what is happening in our city and the possible displacement from homes, and the feeling of isolation and fear escalates.
The GWF will be meeting in the coming days to create short- and long-term plans for assisting those in our community living with this disease. Detailed programs, services, and fundraising plans will be announced soon. I thank everyone for their continued thoughts, prayers, love, donations, and offers for assistance to the residents of our city, as well as to the residents along the Texas Gulf Coast and Louisiana. We have a long recovery ahead of us, but we will come through this experience stronger than ever. #HoustonStrong
